Gay Cairns has a vibrant, varied LGBTI community who know how to party!
There are themed gay parties held once a month - usually the first Saturday. Run by local community group Out! Cairns, it's a great place to meet the wide cross section of the locals and dance the night away with the resident DJ. There is usually a drag show sometime during the evening, but be warned... if you are from any major city in the world don't expect the drag queens to be as 'professional' as you are use to. There are one or two excellent performers in town, just hope it's one of these performing if you plan on going.
There are also parties held at the gay resort Turtle Cove. If you plan on going to one of these make sure you plan to spend the night, as the resort is nearly an hour out of Cairns, so can be a fair way to catch a cab, if you are planning on drinking. Just because you may think you are in an insolated part of the world it doesn't mean the boys in blue aren't around to catch you drink driving.
The biggest parties in Cairns include the New Year’s Eve parties which are held at different locations every NYE, as well as the Tropical Pride Party which follows the Cairns Tropical Pride Festival every August. Probably the biggest - and growing in popularity with travellers all over every year - is the Tropical Pride Splash! pool party, sponsored by this website.
The Tropical Pride Festival is a great community festival, which includes many gay events, including Fair Day at the 'Cairns Tanks'.
